The National Cancer Institute (NCI) held a Post-Treatment Surveillance Workshop at the Shady Grove Campus this past March. In addition to lung cancer, the workshop focused on prostate cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer and testicular cancer.
The lung cancer breakout session was co-chaired by Dr. Shakun Malik (NCI) and Dr. Geoff Oxnard (Dana-Farber Cancer Inst.), and included investigators with expertise in oncology, radiology, biomarker development, and statistics. Liquid biopsy methods, imaging and endpoints & statistical considerations for potential trials of lung cancer surveillance were reviewed. A number of strawman proposals were discussed that included incorporating imaging in early stage disease and cfDNA analysis that included both NSCLC and small cell (SCLC) surveillance concepts. A key question was whether to focus on prospective trials for plasma collection and analysis, versus analysis of existing specimens from ongoing trials. The “conversation” will continue over the next several months, ultimately resulting in a white paper.
